A Protected Structure

Project Outline

The project involved the complete renovation and refurbishment of a former 2 room Schoolhouse in Clooneenmore Co Sligo into a modernised family holiday home. As the building is a Protected Structure, the original architectural features had to be maintained but integrated into a design that provided for a modernisation of the building's function and services. The external walls and ceiling were insulated and a multizone underfloor heating system was installed to substanitally upgrade the thermal performane of the property. The resulting accommodation provided 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a large combined living/kitchen/dining space. A separate outbuilding was constructed to house the service elements of the project.
  • Thermal Insulation - Underfloor insulation was fitted together with internal composite insulation/plasterboard panels to all external walls. The attic insulation was also upgraded
  • Windows/Doors - The original timber sliding sash windows were found to be in a significant state of disrepair. Consequently, they were all replaced with new hardwood sliding sash windows and frames to match the original timber profiles of the windows and doors being removed. These are coupled with internal timber shutters.
  • Mechanical & Electrical Installations - The property was fully re-wired and a complete new heating & hot water system was installed. The boiler, water storage and fule storage were accommodated in a separate outbuilding. Underfloor heating was installed throughout the building.
  • Fuel Burning Stove - A multi fuel stove was installed in the living area as part of the project.

Plan

The plan below outlines the ground floor layout of the project. It hightlights the original configuration of the property as 2 main rooms with a central shared etrance hallway. The new plan provides for 3 bedrooms, main bathroom and ensuite facilities on one side of the plan with a large open plan kitchen, dining, living space on the opposite side.
